2020 Winner: Barry Smith
The winner for our recent Teacher & Medical Professional Gift Card Giveaway is Barry Smith. Barry is an elementary school teacher at Deepwater Elementary in the Deer Park Independent School District. We are honored to recognize Barry for his long career dedicated to teaching so many young minds in our community. Read Barry’s reaction statement below to learn more about him and his dedication to his students.
Reaction Statement: “Hello, my name is Barry Smith and I have been an educator for 22 years. During this time I have worked with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. I have been teaching at Deepwater Elementary in the Deer Park Independent School District for the last 17 years. During these years I have taught all of the core subjects, been a robotics coach, and led many clubs after school, including STEM and book clubs. I was the recipient of the NSTA Shell Regional Lab Challenge in 2018, and have written and received over $20,000 dollars worth of grants to provide different opportunities for my students. I am currently an RTI (Response to Intervention) teacher working with small groups of students in reading. I love igniting the passion of reading in my students, as this is a skill they will use throughout their lives. This year has brought new challenges to the teaching profession, with face to face classes, online “virtual” classes, and hybrid classes, but facing this challenge keeps me focused and energized. My favorite moments of being an educator are the reactions on my student’s faces when they start to understand and make connections to the world around them.
Earning this nomination is exciting. It is not every day that educators get rewarded for doing their jobs. I truly enjoy being an educator and this is a validation of my career choice. I am truly blessed to teach such amazing students, helping them learn and grow. Thank you for recognizing the work of educators.”
