Police Pursuit Wreck Highlights Importance of Uninsured Motorist Coverage

A police pursuit that began in Southwest Houston Thursday ended in a deadly wreck in Stafford. According to authorities, the pursuit began near the 11000 block of South Sam Houston Parkway when a law enforcement officer attempted to pull over a vehicle without a license plate. The driver of that vehicle evaded the stop and turned onto West Airport Boulevard. Following a chase that reached speeds in excess of 90 mph, the vehicle lost control, collided with two curbs, and flipped, killing one victim.

Car Accidents That Resulting from Police Pursuits

Car accidents resulting from police pursuits involve unique legal issues when it comes to the rights of victims and families who lose loved ones in high speed pursuit wrecks. While most car wrecks victims have the opportunity to pursue a personal injury case against the at-fault driver (which is often defended against by their insurance provider), this typically is not the case in police pursuit accidents.

In a large percentage of police chases, drivers who evade stops and arrests do not have insurance. As such, this leaves victims and families with little recourse for recovering compensation for their damages in personal injury and wrongful death claims. Although evaders can be arrested, charged with crimes, and ordered to pay restitution to victims and families for the harm they caused them, it is unlikely this restitution will ever provide victims with the amount of compensation they truly need – particularly if an offender is sentenced to prison.

The prospect of such an unfortunate situation further stresses the importance of purchasing uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM / UIM) coverage as part of their auto insurance policies. These policies can prove invaluable when unexpected wrecks with uninsured and underinsured drivers leave victims on the hook for their own expenses, including their medical bills and lost wages. When victims with this coverage are injured in accidents, they can pursue a recovery of their damages by filing a claim with their own insurance provider.
